The Best Teachers' Discounts Out There

Teaching is one of the noblest professions to which people can devote their lives. While it’s true that you’ll never get rich doing it, a large number of companies offer perks or discounts to teachers. While some of these require you to sign up or register on their website, there are many that you can get by simply presenting your teacher ID.

Supplies

Staples, Office Max, and Office Depot all offer teacher rewards programs. Most of them require enrollment, which is free, and which entitles teachers to a variety of discounts and cash-back offers. And, as any teacher will tell you, a staggering amount of their personal salary goes towards supplying the classroom.

Books

The quintessential teaching accessory! Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, and Book Warehouse all offer educator’s discounts. Many local and independent bookstores also have educator reward programs.

Clothing

Loft, The Limited, J-Crew, and New York and Company are among the clothing retailers that offer a 15% discount on in-store purchases to teachers. Loft requires teachers to sign up for a rewards program, though it comes with additional discounts for new members. A valid school ID will nab you the discount at the others!

Electronics

This is where being a teacher can really pay off! Apple has an entire online store for teachers where educators (including librarians and home schoolers) can enjoy big discounts. Bose, Dell, HP, and Sony all offer discounts on many products, though some stipulate that they must be used in the classroom.

Museums and Zoos

Unsurprisingly, museums are very generous toward their educator brethren. The Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Children’s Museum, Carnegie Science Center, and many other prestigious institutions offer discounts to teachers. Some museums require teachers to be employed in the same state, but most have some manner of discount in place. The Smithsonian Institute also conducts an annual educational expo called “teacher’s night.” The program is free, but registration is required.

Cars
Many car dealerships offer occasional promotions for teachers. For instance, Autoland, your Toyota dealer in New Jersey, has offered deals where they waive the first month’s payment, or donate money for school supplies for teachers who buy or lease a car with them.

While it’s unlikely that anyone will go into teaching for the myriad retail perks they will be able to take advantage of, the sheer number of companies that offer some kind of reward or discount program for teachers is a testament to the importance of the men and women who spend their lives enriching those of others.

Important Tips for Caring for Your Tires in the Winter

While there are many parts of your car to check as the winter arrives, your tires are particularly important. The cold temperatures can affect your tire pressure and with the heavy snow and ice to deal with, it's important to make sure that your vehicle is up to the challenge.

Here are some useful tips that will help you ensure that your tires will be as safe as possible on the winter roads.

How much tread is left on your tires?
When driving in potentially slippery conditions, you'll need tires that will grip the road, which is why it's crucial to make note of how old your tires are and how much tread they have left. You can check the tread by placing a penny in the groove of the tire with Abraham Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can see the top of his head, it's time to replace the tire.

Even if your tires aren't worn down, you should still check them for uneven wear, as this can indicate that your alignment is off. Also, make sure your tires are rotated every 3,000-7,000 miles; doing this helps them to wear more evenly and extends their life.

Is your tire pressure sufficient?
Although you should check your tire pressure regularly, it is especially important to do so when the seasons change. The drop or rise in temperature affects your tire pressure: it usually increases in warmer months and decreases in colder ones.

In addition, your tire pressure is affected by not only the temperature outside, but the fluctuating levels of heat or cold throughout the day. Temperatures can drop drastically overnight and rise in the afternoon, so you should keep an eye on your pressure and check it more often during any extreme weather.

Common winter tire care tips
  • Set your tires to the pressure specified in your driver's manual.
  • Check and adjust your pressure in the morning and prior to driving.
  • Check your tires with a quality pressure gauge. Many vehicles today come equipped with a monitoring system that will alert you if your tires are losing pressure. You can also check your owner's manual or the sticker in your car.

As a highly recognized Toyota dealer in NJ, Autoland is dedicated to not only selling quality vehicles at unbeatable prices, but also providing excellent service. Stop by our Springfield location today to ensure you're prepared for the winter roads.

Hydrogen Fuel Car Coming from Toyota

We may not be living in the times of the Jetsons yet, but in 2015 you may be able to walk into a Toyota dealer in NJ or any other state and purchase a hydrogen fueled car. In January 2014, the Japanese automaker will show off its first and only hydrogen car at the auto show in Las Vegas. Green car aficionados did not think this type of technology was going to be a reality for decades to come, but Toyota, the leader in hybrids, has found a way to make it happen. Read on to learn about this new form of fuel.

What's Special about Hydrogen Fuel?

It's easiest to compare hydrogen cars to electric ones that use batteries to store energy. Although they are similar, hydrogen cars are superior because they weigh so much less. A battery weighs nearly one thousand pounds, so electric cars require a lot of energy to just move the battery. Further, electric cars lose power when they are not in use and require an outlet and time to charge. Hydrogen cars, on the other hand, doesn't lose energy and can be refueled in minutes. Electric cars have been very hard to sell because of all these roadblocks plus their hefty price tags. Toyota hasn't officially come up with a list price yet, and though, initially, the hydrogen car may be somewhat expensive, the company is hoping that sufficient interest will enable them to invest in more affordable models.

Environmentalists Rejoice

Toyota proves to be the most environmentally friendly automaker with the release of this new car. Hydrogen fuel is the cleanest for Mother Earth because it doesn't produce any pollutants -- only water. Other cars give off smog, carbon monoxide, and/or carbon dioxide, which are incredibly harmful to the ozone. Some car manufacturers brag that electric cars are green; however, they are only green when the electricity that is used to charge the car comes from wind or solar power. Hydrogen fuel powered cars will be the clear-cut best choice for those that are looking for a sustainable car option.

The Waiting Game

There's still time for another automaker to discover this new technology since Toyota will not be releasing until 2015, though there is very little chance that they would have a viable model by then. Everyone is curious to see what the car will look like and what kind of efficiency stats it will boast. One thing is for sure -- come 2015, Toyota dealers will be gearing up to show off the latest and greatest sustainable car.
